In order to heal, we need nature. I didn’t know that years ago when I was sick, but something in me did.
As a child, my father taught me to relax my body in order to help me learn the planets. Many years later I understood he used a hypnosis technique. It worked very well and I have never forgotten the planets in order as I learned them that day.
It was so simple, even a child could learn it. All you need to do is start with your toes and think of each part of your body from your toes up with the intention of relaxing that part of your body. Keep breathing as you relax. When you get to the top of your head, you can go on to the next step, which is learning something or meditating creatively.
When I got sick, I used this technique as a tool to deal with the fear and stress I was living. I would use the relaxation technique and then something started happening after my body was relaxed.
In these meditations, I started encountering a woman made of nature. She would wait for me in a little castle and bring me inside. The place was an enclosed garden with little springs and pools, and we would sit together on a rock. She would hold me and infuse me with a green substance. Then I would go in one of the pools of the garden, and just be there, relaxed and safe.
I had not yet met Mary Magdalene at that time. I was not interested in spiritual themes, but the woman came into my meditations spontaneously so I just accepted the images and allowed myself to be supported in this way. The woman was unlike anything or anyone I have ever met. She was made of nature, of leaves and mud, but human-like at the same time. She was solid as a pyramid, and soft like loose earth. Green and grey were her colors, like clay and moss. She felt like a grandmother.
Ever since then, I celebrate nature in my art. But living in a city, and especially in the winter, I feel so far from nature. Often, I feel an inner urge to just leave and go somewhere warm and green.
I take refuge in drawing the Magdalene with leaves and flowers as a prayer for nature and green: Santa María Magdalena, show me how to reach the healing earth.
