Today’s drawing of Mary Magdalene
Today’s drawing of Mary Magdalene

As I draw Mary Magdalene, I feel that I am creating a new language, a new kind of expression of prayer for myself. As I draw, I allow myself to go beyond the traditional symbols and iconography, even my own symbols and iconography I have developed through 20 year of painting Mary Magdalene. In reality, it’s not truly new, since I painted Mary Magdalene with a veil of leaves early on, but somehow drawing feels like a more immediate and unconscious expression. I do what comes to mind in the moment, and hope that it will turn out ok.

Not all the drawings I have published here daily are great. But little by little, by seeing it as a form of devotion and prayer and commitment, there have been moments when something I really like comes through and just seeing the daily work makes me feel capable of continuing. I don’t know if I will make any new discoveries or even grow greatly, but the process has given me a trust in myself after years of missing that consistently creative part of myself.

This all makes me think that a daily practice of anything, any little action or thought, can build up to become a force of change. I am trusting in this process to carry me to another level, another existence, another daily reality. In a sense, it’s already happened because I have created more in the last 3 months than in the last 7 years, and in the process I have relearned the discipline and trust that allowing yourself to be guided by Infinite Divine Love can accomplish.

There is still much to do, but there is also the opportunity to flow instead of struggle. And while not every day or every week are creatively productive and satisfying, the little steps of trusting every day add up.

In life as in drawing, I will do what feels right, and trust that it will turn out ok.
